Product overview

Mailfence is a privacy-focused email and collaboration suite operated by ContactOffice Group sa, a Belgian company founded in 1999 and based in Brussels. The Mailfence service launched in November 2013. It includes email with built-in OpenPGP encryption, calendar, contacts, cloud document storage with online editing, group workspaces, and a meeting scheduler. Encryption and decryption happen in the browser using an integrated OpenPGP keystore where users can generate, import and manage their own key pairs (RSA and ECC) without any browser plugin. For recipients who do not use PGP, Mailfence offers symmetric password-protected messages. The service supports IMAP, POP3 and SMTP natively without requiring a bridge application, which sets it apart from some competitors. CalDAV, CardDAV and WebDAV are also supported. All servers are located in Belgium, managed in-house on the company's own infrastructure. Belgian privacy law applies, and the company states it only responds to valid Belgian court orders. Mailfence is privately held with no external investors. The company reports over 600,000 managed accounts. A permanent free plan offers 500 MB of email storage and 500 MB of document storage. Paid plans start at 2.50 EUR per month. Native mobile apps for iOS and Android launched in October 2023. KEY FEATURES: - Built-in OpenPGP keystore with key generation and management, no plugin required - Symmetric encrypted messages for non-PGP recipients - Native IMAP, POP3 and SMTP support without bridge application - Calendar, contacts, documents and group workspaces in one suite - Own infrastructure in Belgium, no US Cloud Act exposure
