Product overview
mailbox.org (recently rebranded to mailbox) is a privacy-focused email and collaboration suite operated by Heinlein Hosting GmbH in Berlin, Germany. Founded in 2014 by Peer Heinlein, it grew out of JPBerlin, a privacy-oriented email service that has been running since 1989. The service includes email, calendar, contacts, cloud file storage, an online office suite for documents and spreadsheets, video conferencing (via OpenTalk), chat, tasks, and polls. mailbox.org supports PGP encryption through its built-in Guard feature, which handles key generation and encryption directly in the webmail interface. It also supports S/MIME natively. For stricter end-to-end encryption, users can pair the service with the Mailvelope browser extension. All data runs on company-owned hardware in two geo-redundant data centers in Berlin, outside the scope of the US Cloud Act. The service holds BSI IT Security Labels from Germany's Federal Office for Information Security. The service supports standard protocols (IMAP, POP3, SMTP, CalDAV, CardDAV, ActiveSync), making it compatible with most email clients including Thunderbird and Outlook. There is no dedicated mobile app; users access the service through standard mail apps or the mobile web interface. Plans start at 1 EUR per month. The company serves individuals, businesses, and public institutions, including roughly 33,000 Berlin public school teachers. KEY FEATURES: - PGP encryption (server-side Guard and client-side via Mailvelope) plus native S/MIME support - Full office suite with document editing, spreadsheets, and presentations - Video conferencing via integrated OpenTalk - Own hardware in BSI-certified data centers in Berlin, 100% renewable energy - Standard protocol support (IMAP, POP3, SMTP, CalDAV, CardDAV, ActiveSync)
